Support for Publication Charges by the Publication Committee

NAOJ members (Note 1) can apply for the subsidy for the publication fee for (1) first/corresponding author papers or (2) coauthored papers led by researchers outside NAOJ. For case (2), the subsidy must be submitted by an NAOJ member. Only one application per person will be approved during the period between 2024 April and 2025 March. Please refer to Note 2 below.

Because our fund has been limited since Fiscal Year 2023, please use other available funds first, so that we can support people who lack other funding options.

Regarding the publication fees of ALMA papers published by young researchers, please apply for this support (https://www2.nao.ac.jp/~eaarc/DATARED/support_publication_en.html) first.

For papers related to CfCA, please apply for the CfCA publication support (https://www.cfca.nao.ac.jp/content/論文出版費用補助)(Japanese only) as well.

Staff at the Astro Biology Center (ABC) must apply for the publication support from ABC.

[Note 1]

NAOJ members are defined as people whose salary is at least 50% paid by NAOJ. Researchers who are employed through the research funds of NAOJ members are also included in NAOJ members.

[Note 2]

  • We (the NAOJ Publication Committee) will subsidize up to 500,000 yen.
  • As a basic rule, we will subsidize the net publication fee, after excluding any open access fees.
  • Because the publication fees of AAS journals (ApJ, ApJL, ApJS, AJ, etc) and A&A have become very expensive with the inclusion of open access fees, we will subsidize 70% of the publication fee, as long as the subsidy does not exceed 500,000 yen.
  • We cannot subsidize very expensive open access fees or Article Processing Charges (APC) of PASJ, Nature, Science, MNRAS etc (Open access fees are for PASJ, Science, and Nature. APC is for MNRAS. Open access fee and APC are essentially the same, in that both are not net publication fees.) For PASJ, we will subsidize 100% of the required publication fee (excluding the open access fee), as long as the subsidy does not exceed 500,000 yen.
  • If the first or corresponding author is a NAOJ member, only that person (i.e., the first or corresponding author) is eligible to apply for our publication subsidy. To subsidize as many NAOJ members as possible, each first or corresponding author will be subsidized, in principle, only once each Japanese Fiscal Year. However, for the first or corresponding author paper of PASJ by NAOJ members, we may be able to subsidize the net publication fee multiple times, because it is inexpensive.
  • The following people who are doing research and/or development while resident at NAOJ, are eligible to apply for the publication subsidy of their first/corresponding author papers: graduate students, JSPS PDs, EAO/EACOA fellows, emeritus professors, and visiting staff. For the first/corresponding author paper of PASJ, we may be able to subside the net publication fee multiple times, because it is inexpensive.
  • We will subsidize the publication fee of first/corresponding author papers by former NAOJ members or graduate students up to one year from their departure from NAOJ, if NAOJ is included in the author's affiliation in the paper. In this case, the invoice must be addressed to NAOJ and a NAOJ member must submit the necessary paperwork.
  • If you have any questions, please contact chair.pubcom@nao.ac.jp.
  • These publication subsidy rules will be subject to change every 6 months.
